Pin Si 品食

When I first saw the name, Pin Si, I thought it translates to '品思', a name which I find rather unique and nice, never mind what it's supposed to mean.

Then, I realised it's actually 品食. As if I have some shares in this shop, I was pretty disturbed by the mismatch. :P Erm... is that a typo error on the hanyu pinyin or is there something I don't know about the translation? :P

Anyways, we decided to give this relatively new restaurant a try.

Pork Chop with Chef's sauce (7/10)

Braised Mushrooms and vegetables (5/10)

Quite bland

Plain Rice (3/10)

Too dry and hard. It was so difficult to chew, let alone digest. The shape of the bowl is pretty unique, but that's beside the point.

'Fresh' drunken prawns served in herbal soup (5/10)

Initially, I find the soup base quite nice. Unfortunately, the prawns were not fresh and it sort of marred the taste of the soup. >_<

We were not the only ones who were dissatisfied with the food. The person on the next table actually ordered another dish because the one she has ordered apparently was rather inedible. o_O

Service

Ok, they were friendly, they were prompt in serving but they were veeery blur.
First, we were asked if we ordered Fish with Rice, when we did not. Then, we were given some noodle dish topped with mushroom, which we thought was our braised mushroom and vegetable dish. They came along again to ask if we ordered coffee, which again, we didn't.

Don't they have some kind of systematic ordering system to follow, instead of playing the guessing game? Obviously the compartments and the many wooden pegs tucked at one corner of their counter were under- or not utilised.

Came one of the friendly waitresses with a feedback form. We don't usually comply with such requests, but this time, our urge to feedback was so strong. hahah it was mostly on the quality of the food. The lack of it, that is.

In a rush to clear the dishes, one of the waiters tripped me on my way out. Easy, man. Easy. >_<

Cathay Snacks

Just watched 'Horton hears a who', on the account that it was from the same creators as 'Ice Age'. :P

The animations were not bad, but I wasn't tickled.

I was intrigued, though, by Horton's thoughts. He believes that there are tiny people living in the speck that he sees. He feels that maybe these tiny people aren't small and that he is big. Maybe there's even someone out there bigger than him and his world, and he and his friends are actually the small ones.

"Are you looking at your reflection in the river or is the reflection looking at you? Which is real?"

I still remember this sentence from my literature teacher, even though it was more than 10 years ago. Although most of my classmates dismissed this almost immediately, I pondered over this for quite a few days with all the 'what-ifs' in my mind.

Oh ok. Enough of my out-of-the-world thoughts. :P Back to the food.

I watched Horton at AMK hub. I must say that this cineplex really offered a good variety of food for cinema goers. I even saw cakes at the display. :P Just want to share what I had.

Breaded hotdog (8/10)

Would be better if it was served hot.

Hokkien Mee @ AMK Hub

First stop was to the Porridge Steamboat recommended by Jaime. Alas, it was full house! By the time we returned to AMK Hub in search for a place to have our dinner, it was already 9 plus. No more roti prata in Ah Mei Cafe. Ichiban, closed. So we decided to go to the AMK Hub foodcourt to try our luck.

The last time we went there, this was the only stall that stood out with its very long queue. We always have the impression that long queues means that the food is exceptionally good. Most of the time, we are right. But sometimes, it's just a false impression.

Hokkien Mee (6/10)

I wouldn't say it's that bad. Just that perhaps, it's not worth queueing up for. One thing for sure, it wasn't cooked on the spot. They merely scooped it out of somewhere. At such late hours, I can't help but feel that they were just reheating the leftovers.

Yes Asian Cafe

I wanted to go to the porridge steamboat buffet recommended by Jaime, but we were bogged down with many bags of grocery after shopping at NTUC. We decided to dine at this place, so that we don't have to walk far before hopping on to a taxi.

Baked Potato (8/10)

It's baked potato on the bottom half, mashed potato with ham and cheese? at the top. The mashed potato was fantastic! My only grouse is that it is not piping hot, as I thought all baked potato should be... It just doesn't taste as good to have it in a less-than-average temperature.

Shanghai Pork and chicken chop with rice (7/10)

The gravy was not bad. The pork chop was a tad too overcooked and thus, pretty hard to chew. Overall, this main course was served quite cold, which is again, a minus point.

Kee Ling Garden Steamboat BBQ

It's a buffet style kinda steamboat.

Soup base (8/10)

The ingredients are pretty standard, so the ratings are for the soup base.

You get to choose from Chicken, Tonic Chicken and Tom Yam for the soup base. My hub asked me which soup base I would like to have, but I already knew that he wanted the Tonic Chicken, so I went along with him and told the man that we wanted that.

Tonic soup are usually not my cup of 'soup'. Surprisingly, I can make do with this one. Sure, it had the bitter tonic taste that I dislike, but the 'chicken' flavour in the soup seemed to conceal the bitterness. Well, a little. As more ingredients were added to the soup, it got more and more addictive.

I believe that a lot of msg was added to the soup because hours after the meal, I still feel thirsty. :P

Price
$12 for adults and $6 for kids. For a eat-all-you-can, I thought this was quite reasonably priced.

Fish & Co

No queues outside Fish & Co, AMK Hub! That's a rare sight but could be easily explained by looking at the time - 3 plus in the afternoon.

We soon find our way into the restaurant, guided by a waitress.

Judging from the design of the menu, we know that it's been a long time since we patronised Fish & Co. I think their previous menu was longish and pretty hard to handle. This menu looks much better with it's simple design and pleasing colour.

Fish & Co never fails to entertain me with trivial little things like this.

Mushroom soup (8/10)

It comes with the meal for an extra $1 only. Good deal. :)

Grilled Salmon (6/10)

I didn't try my hub's dish. But judging from his disappointed look and repeated rants about the deterioration in the quality of the food, I'm gonna guess he is giving at most, a 6 for it.

Sweet and Sour Fish (8/10)

On the other hand, I was rather satisfied with the taste of the sweet and sour fish. It tasted pretty much the same as the last time I took it. Just that... where's my golden fries? :(

Ambience
I love the full length windows. It allows a lot of natural light to shine through and gives the place a very cheery feel. What's worth highlighting is, the restaurant has a longish shape which allows most of their customers to be given a chance to be seated at the ever-popular window seat! :)

Service
üüüüü
Pretty prompt and friendly.

Price
I thought the price were pretty reasonable. There seemed to be a drop in the price, but I think it's because they took out the side dishes, such as fries? Hope it's not one of their sales tactics. :P

Lotus Roots Soup (6/10)

The Soup Restaurant. My guess would be that their specialty is soup? But nay, this is just an ordinary bowl of soup.

Special Beancurd (8/10)

Not too bad. Love the wobbly jelly-like beancurd fillings behind the skins..

Mushrooms with Brocolli (6/10)

Very ordinary.

Chicken (7/10)

This is their signature dish, surprisingly. This dish comes across to me nothing more than the chicken from a typical Hainanese Chicken Rice stall. Nothing special about their garlic dip ley...

Pepper Lunch

It was only 6pm but queues are already forming outside restaurants in AMK hub. I managed to convince my hub to queue for the Pepper Lunch by showing him that some of the customers in the restaurant were finishing their food soon. :P

I wanted to watch the video showing how we can cook the food, but was distracted by my hub who kept asking me what I would like to have. I was undecided but settled for a double chicken set. When we were showed into the restaurant, my loh soh hub asked me what I would like to have, again. I subconsciously blurted out that I would like to have pepper chicken rice set.

It was a blessing in disguise, I should say. The uncle next to our table ordered the double chicken set and it doesn't look the least appetising. :P Mine certainly looked better. ;)

Step 1
Stir the rice, chicken and corn

Step 2 (determines whether your rice turns out good or not)
Add your preferred sauce.

I chose Garlic soya sauce over honey sauce. I know it's unhealthy, but for the taste, I splattered the sauce generously over the rice. Yums.

Step 3
Mix well.

My hub ordered the beef set.

Sticky Rice 2

Perhaps it's just very convenient, being located just at the entrance of AMK Hub, my hub and I found ourselves in Sticky Rice restaurant again, despite the fact that there are many other restaurants in that shopping centre waiting for us to conquer.

Even before I take my seat, I told my hub, "I want the Chicken Fried Rice I took the other time". See how much I miss my Fried Rice? Hee...

Type
Thai Food

Taste

Chicken Fried Rice (8/10)

It's slightly more oily this time, but taste just as good as the other time. No regrets on choosing this dish again.

Glass Noodle (9/10)

My hub's glass noodle taste really good too. It's so good that I helped myself to at least three forkfuls of it. If I wasn't worried that my hub would not have his fill, I could have gobbled up the whole plate. heh! I wanna order this on our next visit!!

Seabass salad (5/10)

Ok, I confess that this order was made by me. The first question that both of us asked when we took our first bite was, 'Where is the fish meat'? We were expecting fish in salad or something along that line (the bubble above my head shows the fish we had at Lao Beijing), but we were served crispy 'flakes' instead. Although it does have some fish flavour, but it taste and look very much like the Malay tauhu telor. It costs $8.90 only. Maybe that's why. :P

Overall, I had a very good meal there until I turned over to see what the two girls beside our table took. Just 2 or 3 vegetable dishes... no rice, no noodles. Very diet. kwa kwa... thanks for making me guilty hor! >_<''

New York New York

Super long queues outside New York New York is a common sight, especially during meal times. Even Jacky Wu mentioned this restaurant in his show. It certainly arouses the curiosity of many on whether if the food in this restaurant is THAT good. At least, it does make my hub and I wanna queue up when there are 'only' four different groups in front of us.

We didn't have to wait long before we were directed to a table right at the end. The menu certainly looked very attractive to us as we scan through the list of food items. We decided to go for the food items marked 'gotta have it'.

We ordered the Fiery Buffalo wings, Creamy Spaghetti with Pork Chop (for me) and Spare Ribs (for my hub). Can't remember the exact fanciful names for the two mains. Our verdict? 'Why the queue ah?'

Type
Western

Taste
Rating 7/10 (for me) 5/10 (for my hub)

Fiery Buffalo wings (7/10)
The Fiery Buffalo wings were not bad but nothing really fantastic about it.

Pasta with Pork Chop (7/10)
I went 'yuuummm' for my first few bites of my main. It's creamy delicious and the pork chop went very well with it. However, when I was halfway through the meal, the same creamy taste that I liked the meal for, became a burden to my stomach and I just couldn't finish it. -_-''

Spare Ribs (6/10)
The spare ribs looked extremely appetising and we couldn't wait to set our fork and knife on it. It was kinda a disappointment because it really didn't match up to its appearance. My hub didn't like it at all and he had to dig into my spaghetti and finish up the buffalo wings to have his fill. The spare ribs were still of acceptable to me (I am very chin chye mah), but strangely, it tasted and looked like duck meat to me. *roll eyes* :P

Candy Floss (8/10)
There were no room in our stomach for dessert so we decided not to go for the dessert. We did harbour thoughts of twirling a stick of candy floss from the candy floss machine (yes, they allow hands-on), but decided not to, as the long queue of people was formed just in front of the candy machine. :P As much as we wanted so much to lay our hands and teeth on the candy floss, both of us were too paiseh to even get near the machine.

When we were to about to exit, my dearest hub finally gave in and took the ready-made candy floss from the machine, but not without asking me a few times, 'take ah?' in front of the people at the queue, to show that it was ME who wanted it. LOL! So cute of him. :D

The candy floss was really sweet and some melted on my lips before I even get to taste it. I can't help but giving it more and more nibbles. Guess I really have a deprived childhood because as far as I can remember, I would have only have tasted candy floss once? My husband felt that it is not up to the standard and that the pink candy floss he has tasted was so much better. On the contrary, I felt it tasted great! I nibbled so many times at the candy floss with so much joy and delight on my face that he can't help but taste it again to confirm that he didn't miss out anything that I seemed to be experiencing. LOL! He's really adorable. Love him! :D

Sticky Rice

We were starving and needed to get food fast. At a late hour of 840pm, there are still queues forming at the entrance of restaurants. So we decided to settle for Sticky Rice, with only two customers in front of us. We got seated in less than a minute because we don't mind taking the seat at the entrance.

Type
Thai

Taste

Pandan Chicken (7/10)
The Pandan chicken really fragrant and tastes especially good when dipped into the Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce.

Fried Rice with chicken (9/10)

The Fried Rice was yummy! And I am pretty sure it wasn't because of the hunger. :P The rice is moist so I believe some people might not like it.

Stick Rice Mango (3/10)
The Sticky Rice Mango is a famous Thai dessert, but I do not fancy it at all. Sorry, but I even had that 'yikey' look when I took my first bite. My hub said it's supposed to be like this, even though he felt he has eaten better versions of this in Thailand. When asked for a rating for this dessert, he gave only a 5.

Ambience
Crowded and a bit weird for our table coz it's almost at the passage way

Service
üüüüü

Pretty good. The waiter even warned us the dish we initially wanted to order is very salty and not everyone can take it.

He actually squat down to take our orders. With him at almost the same level as us, it not only helps us not to physically strain our neck and his back during communication, it also brings about a friendly feel.

Refills water promptly when asked. He gave me warm water instead of the cold water I wanted, but that's ok. Just something minor.Price
