If not for Yvonne, I wouldn't know that Rajah Inn serves Porridge Buffet during lunch time!
Porridge Buffet (7/10)
The food is decent, nothing short of those you find in food courts/kopitiam. For the variety and the price of $6.90 per pax, I'd say it's value for money!
I am not surprised to read bad reviews about this restaurant, because I too, had tasted really bad food here before. And it was on the occasion when I suggested to dine there in an outing. I was a bit embarrassed by the lousy recommendation that I have made back then. :P
Maybe 'inconsistency' is a better word to describe the food here, for all the food were to my liking on my previous visit.
Drinks (8/10)
Mushroom Soup (8/10)
There are whole mushroom chunks (not bits) in the soup - quite uncommon for a reasonably priced restaurant like this.
Whenever I go to a food court, I will usually walk one big round before deciding what to have. Sometimes, I ended up ordering food from the first stall I passed by. :P
This time, I zoomed straight into Lotus Thai Viet. I knew there are still many dishes waiting for me to try.
Minced Chicken Omelette with rice (9/10)
I wanted to order the set, which consisted of the main (above), a bowl of tom yam soup and fried spring roll. Auntie later apologised and said that they ran out of spring roll. I had no choice but to take the ala carte rice with omelette.
As I stood there waiting for the dish to be served, I started to have doubts. "Geez... is this appetizing enough to finish? It's just rice and omelette. Should I change my order? But there must be a reason why two others have chosen to have that too, huh?"
The omelette, as unpromising as it looked, turned out to be great! It had a light crisp on certain areas and a consistent savoury flavour throughout.
Just the omelette to go with the rice and I am contented.
I can hardly find any minced bits of the chicken though. :P Soup (7/10)
Auntie was nice enough to offer me a bowl of soup even when I did not take their set meal.
It's probably just me. I don't like the overall bland taste of this roll. If there is anything that I have tasted, it's the mint. And I don't like the idea of eating something that taste like toothpaste. :P
Clear Tom Yam Soup (8/10)
You don't have to go to restaurants to get a good bowl of Tom Yam Soup.
I don't think I have given such a low review before, but I think this dish deserves just this. I don't really know what that 1 point is for, actually. We can hardly find any chicken on this dish. It was full of chilli (very strange ones because it is as hard as the shell of a crab!)
And it's supposed to be their signature dish! Very disappointing indeed.
Durian Puff (8/10)
Not too bad. It's their signature dessert. Crispy (but a little oily) crust with smooth and sweet durian fillings. I've never eaten anything like this before, so it was considered quite a good experience.
Price $26.95 (after a 10% discount for NTUC Link) - also includes Stir-Fried long beans, 2 rice and Jasmine tea for two too.
I have warned him that since he is such a fussy eater, he won't like the food in this restaurant. He still insisted on giving it a chance. Ok lor. :P Chicken Sukiyaki (6/10)
Pork Hot Pot (6/10)
Potato Cake (8/10)
Tofu (8/10)
Chocolate Furtado (10/10)!
The chocolate coating was superb! Yums! After we are done with our meal, he said, 'We can only come back for the dessert!'
Told you. :P
Service Poor. Impatient supervisor (I think) who used so much force while clearing the plates that the liquid splashed onto the table that we are going to be seated at. Another waitress was better.
This menu looked good. The black chicken didn't appeal to me though. :P
I was like o_O when I saw such a big bottle of lime juice. When the waitress saw my reaction, she laughed and said, 'too big a bottle, eh?' The lime juice's not bad. Not too sour.
Black Chicken soup (3/10) Ok, that's my biased rating because I don't like black chicken in the first place. Those who like tonic-ky soup would probably find this superb.
Fried Rice (7/10) Pretty dry. Still, it managed to satisfy my craving for fried rice that day.
Chye Sim (7/10) Pretty ordinary.
Fish (8/10) The thin coating of the sauce on the smooth and tender fish complements the dish very well.
Mango pudding (3/10) Both of us didn't like it.
Almond Jelly with longan (9/10) Always a safe bet and always my choice of dessert. Cooling and refreshing!
I have always liked the smell of almond. When I was young, Ah Mah liked to cook Almond Agar Agar for us. I would help her with the nitty gritties like stirring the mixture and opening up the almond syrup bottle. I used to spend a good 5 minutes sniffing (like a drug addict) the aroma of the almond syrup. I only stopped doing so when my Ah Mah asked for the syrup to be poured into the mixture. :P
My hub used to loathe the smell and taste of Almond. That's something I cannot comprehend... :P Anyway, he has opened himself up to the wonderful world of Almond recently.
If he is going to be a convert, this bowl of Almond Jelly certainly played a big and important part. He actually liked it! :)
