Traditional Bak Kut Prawn Mee Soup

My hub commented that I will be doing great disservice to this bowl of delicious Prawn Mee Soup if I were to post this photo.

Indeed. :P

This bowl of prawn mee soup looked so much better when it first landed on my table, but the photo was taken after I was halfway through.

Nonetheless, I had to take a snapshot of this because

1) It is indeed very tasty. I had to share good stuff
2) It is very rare in hawker centres nowadays. Not the type of food, but the way it is cooked. I am feeling nostalgic now...
3) I may not be eating this for a very long time... as I will be going on diet. No no, it's not the prawn mee soup itself that I am avoiding. But the You Tiao that I must have when I take this dish...

You Tiao, you were asking? I can sense your eyes popping out as you read this, but the you tiao really goes well when dipped into the soup.

Step 1 - Dip You Tiao into soup
Step 2 - Bite dunked You Tiao
Step 3 - Eat one mouth of mee
Step 4 - Drink the Soup
Step 5 - Drink beverage (preferably chrysanthemum tea or green tea)

Wah, best!

You really gotta try it to believe it. Well, I managed to make my hub a believer! :)

I guess this way of eating can only be found in our family. It could be 'taught' by our Ah Mah or 'invented' by my cousins. I didn't really find out. But kudos to the 'founder', for what better combinations can anyone come up with? :D

Walls Mini Hazelnut

Ice Cream are generally delicious, so there isn't really a need to blog about them. But this bite-sized Mini Hazelnut ice cream is on its way, or maybe already in extinction.

We couldn't find it in any of the supermarkets or minimarts we went to recently. I guess it must have been recalled and replaced by this 'popper's' thingy. I mean, they could have introduced one and retain the other for big fans like my mum, my hub and me, no? :(

The three of us love it because it is yummy. Imagine sinking your teeth through a thin chocolate fudge 'crust' and into the creamy, snowy coloured fillings. Heavenly!

I want my Mini Hazelnuts back in the supermarkets' shelves! *Protest*

My Mum's Cuisine

I gave my hub the opportunity of 'carroting' me in Akashi, but much to my surprise, he chose to have our meal in My Mum's Cuisine, just a few steps away from Akashi. That could have saved me quite a hefty sum, I smiled, as we stepped into the restaurant. :P

My Mum's Cuisine. A very warm name that matches up with the warm colour of the interior - bright yellow.

Type

Taste

Ngor Hiang (6/10)
It really wasn't up to my expectations. Haven't been able to taste good Ngor Hiang recently...

Chicken Hor Fun (7/10)

I ordered this because many others have this on their table when we enter the restaurant. No regrets... until I tasted my hub's laksa. :P

Laksa (8/10)
It was tasty. Not too spicy. A typical good bowl of lip-smacking laksa!

Ambience
Casual. The bright yellow interior was acccompanied by stuff prevalent in the 70s/80s. You know, the 'Mum's' generation?

Fish & Co

No queues outside Fish & Co, AMK Hub! That's a rare sight but could be easily explained by looking at the time - 3 plus in the afternoon.

We soon find our way into the restaurant, guided by a waitress.

Judging from the design of the menu, we know that it's been a long time since we patronised Fish & Co. I think their previous menu was longish and pretty hard to handle. This menu looks much better with it's simple design and pleasing colour.

Fish & Co never fails to entertain me with trivial little things like this.

Mushroom soup (8/10)

It comes with the meal for an extra $1 only. Good deal. :)

Grilled Salmon (6/10)

I didn't try my hub's dish. But judging from his disappointed look and repeated rants about the deterioration in the quality of the food, I'm gonna guess he is giving at most, a 6 for it.

Sweet and Sour Fish (8/10)

On the other hand, I was rather satisfied with the taste of the sweet and sour fish. It tasted pretty much the same as the last time I took it. Just that... where's my golden fries? :(

Ambience
I love the full length windows. It allows a lot of natural light to shine through and gives the place a very cheery feel. What's worth highlighting is, the restaurant has a longish shape which allows most of their customers to be given a chance to be seated at the ever-popular window seat! :)

Service
üüüüü
Pretty prompt and friendly.

Price
I thought the price were pretty reasonable. There seemed to be a drop in the price, but I think it's because they took out the side dishes, such as fries? Hope it's not one of their sales tactics. :P

Lao Beijing Revisited

I was supposed to give my hub treats over the weekend. I went along with his suggestion of having dinner at Lao Beijing. It seemed to be within the range of what I call a decent and sincere (Read: pricey) treat. =P

Taste

Honey Lemon Juice (6/10)

As I was browsing through the menu, a waitress approached me to ask what beverage I would like to have. They were friendly, yes. But it sort of irritates me when I was interrupted for the second time while I was trying to decide on a dish. I succumbed to the waitress' persistence and asked what I could have. She suggested Honey Lemon Juice and gave me a list of benefits such as anti-aging, smooth skin, etc. I find it rather amusing because I doubt a one-time glass of Honey Lemon Juice could possibly have such an immediate effect on me. I ordered it anyway, so that I can concentrate on the menu.
The drink doesn't really work for me, especially with the sourness in it. To think that my hub actually ordered the same beverage after trying mine! >_<'

Stir-Fried Long Beans (Si Ji Dou) (8/10)

Pretty crunchy long beans, we have here!
:)

Sweet and Sour fish (7/10)

Still as starchy as before. I don't find it as nice this time. Perhaps, the novelty wears off after our last visit...

Deep Fried Tofu (6/10)

It was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - the way I like tofu to be. The downside is, there wasn't much flavourings (such as salt) on it.

Ambience
This time, I've made a reservation to be seated near the windows. The privacy and comfort is there.

Service
üüüüü
The service is commendable, as usual. However, the staff are too 'onz' when it comes to serving drinks and clearing plates. Too good is no good.

I paid a $90+ for the meal.

1A Crispy Curry Puffs

We were looking for a quick and light bite at Tampines Mall before attending his friend's ROM ceremony. He actually suggested having Teppanyaki, which I bluntly objected. I certainly do not want to turn up at the ceremony with an oily face or food splatters on my white top! :P

I then recalled from Thursday's food variety show, that there is a stall at the basement selling curry puffs. I thought it would be good to take this opportunity to try out this popular stall. My hub went along with this idea immediately.

The queue was much shorter than what I have expected - with only 5 groups in front of us. I took up my camera for a quick snap snap of the stall and the creators of the loads of curry puffs at the glass display.

And the boxes with a very vibrant feel...

Taste
Durian puff (7/10)

My hub was pretty impressed by how tasty the unconventional durian puff could be. I, on the other hand, didn't find it so special.

Curry Puff (8/10)

Photo taken with one hand holding the paper bag and the other, a camera.

I would like to reiterate what the customers on the variety show said - It's not too oily and the filings are not too spicy. I have taken curry puffs which will give me that 'heaty' and 'dry-throat' feeling, but this, does not. Which is good because no one should be 'punished' with a sore throat after consuming a tasty snack such as a curry puff. :P

The fillings... makes you wanna queue up eh? :)

The Soup Restaurant

Type
Chinese

Taste

Lotus Roots Soup (6/10)

The Soup Restaurant. My guess would be that their specialty is soup? But nay, this is just an ordinary bowl of soup.

Special Beancurd (8/10)

Not too bad. Love the wobbly jelly-like beancurd fillings behind the skins..

Mushrooms with Brocolli (6/10)

Very ordinary.

Chicken (7/10)

This is their signature dish, surprisingly. This dish comes across to me nothing more than the chicken from a typical Hainanese Chicken Rice stall. Nothing special about their garlic dip ley...

Ambience
Pretty 'China', as expected. But a bit squeezy between tables.

Me, A Peranakan?

It's in the blood... Or so I found out today.

I randomly clicked on two profiles on the stomp foodie's club and guess what? Both are Peranakans.

Is it just pure concidence or is there a slightly higher chance that a Peranakan is an extreme food enthusiast as well?

I am not a true blue Peranakan (just one eighth). Despite that small fraction, I would like to think that this is what attributes to my love for food and cooking. Heh! ;)

Pepper Lunch

It was only 6pm but queues are already forming outside restaurants in AMK hub. I managed to convince my hub to queue for the Pepper Lunch by showing him that some of the customers in the restaurant were finishing their food soon. :P

I wanted to watch the video showing how we can cook the food, but was distracted by my hub who kept asking me what I would like to have. I was undecided but settled for a double chicken set. When we were showed into the restaurant, my loh soh hub asked me what I would like to have, again. I subconsciously blurted out that I would like to have pepper chicken rice set.

It was a blessing in disguise, I should say. The uncle next to our table ordered the double chicken set and it doesn't look the least appetising. :P Mine certainly looked better. ;)

Step 1
Stir the rice, chicken and corn

Step 2 (determines whether your rice turns out good or not)
Add your preferred sauce.

I chose Garlic soya sauce over honey sauce. I know it's unhealthy, but for the taste, I splattered the sauce generously over the rice. Yums.

Step 3
Mix well.

My hub ordered the beef set.
